It’s been over a month now since the standoff began between The FBI and Apple over gaining access to an iPhone belonging to one of the alleged San Bernardino shooters. Yesterday this all came to a close when the government announced that it no longer needed Apple to comply as their alternative method for breaking into the phone proved to be a success.
Prior to this announcement, numerous security firms had been suggesting what alternative methods the government could potentially use to get into the phone, the main suggestion being ‘NAND Mirroring’. Despite this, the director of the FBI has stated in a news conference that the suggested method was ineffective but did not elaborate on what was used instead, leaving many to speculate.
No one is yet to know whether or not the government even obtained anything of use from breaking into the phone since they had previously recovered files from the icloud backups of the phone. This whole situation has sparked a huge debate as to whether or not Apple were right to uphold the privacy of the user in this particular situation so we would love to hear what you think!
