Getting the best out of Winter Wonderland
Welcome to the home stretch to Christmas. We’ve all - slightly - blubbed at the John Lewis Christmas advert and then later derided it slightly, we’ve stumbled blindly into the Christmas supermarket aisle (which only two days ago was full of Halloween merchandise) and now we’re on the look out for the best gifts for our nearest and dearest. Another modern tradition is now a trip to London’s Winter Wonderland Christmas funfair and market. Of course there is the standard Bavarian fair of bratwurst, glühwein (mulled wine) and wicker decorations but what else does it have to offer? What are the best things to see and to be seen at this years Wonderland?
If you’re ace on skates
Like any self respecting Christmas themed venue there is an ice rink for you to twirl and glide to your hearts content. The Ski Zillertal Ice Rink has session times that run every hour, on the hour, between 10am and 9pm and each session last 50 minutes.
If you’re with a kid (or a big kid at heart)
Like in The Lion the Witch & the Wardrobe we all dreamed of walking through a doorway to discover a new land. Well now you can. In the Magical Ice Kingdom you can take a walk through an immersive space that includes the magical fairy forest, whilst looking out for the frozen giants and discovering the glistening lake of ice. Be warned the thermostat is permanently set to -8°c!
If you like a novelty tipple
The Ice Bar offers you an artic setting in which to sup a winter warmer. Given a cloak and gloves upon arrival to keep warm you are then served drinks into shaped ice vessels. You get a complimentary drink upon arrival but note there is an entry price so you may want to book tickets in advance as it is quite popular.
Alternatively there is Mr Fogg’s Cocktail Bar which is a quintessentially British pop-up abode that transports guests into the heart of a truly Dickensian Christmas, complete with Victorian-inspired décor and hearty honest fare.
If you’re like thrills & spills
The big top has come to Winter Wonderland and is being shared between the family daytime troupe Zippos Circus and Cirque Berserk’s show ADREENALINE for the adults. For Zippos show expect to see clowns, acrobats, jugglers, high wire stunts and the…(pause for suspense!)...’Wheel of Death’!
The Cirque Berserk’s show features the ‘world's most dangerous circus acts’, the Globe of Terror, plus a troupe of over thirty jugglers, acrobats, aerialists, dancers and death-defying stunt men!
